Vigo CASA to begin training new volunteers

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County CASA program will begin training a new group of volunteers on Sept. 26.

CASA trains community volunteers to speak on behalf of foster children’s safety and well-being during juvenile court proceedings.

The training curriculum is comprised of 30 hours pre-service training covering  topics such as the role of the CASA volunteer, laws, report writing, understanding children and families, and more. In addition, there will be juvenile courtroom observation.

The first and second quarter of 2012 saw a record-breaking increase of substantiated child abuse cases in Vigo County. The CASA program, which includes more than 100 trained and active volunteers, is struggling to ensure every child has an advocate to represent their needs and wishes.

A new group of volunteers were sworn in by Magistrate Daniel Kelly on Aug. 27. They were: Lindsey Hardey, Patti Gilbert, Susan Clarke, Nicole Alli, Lori Wenzel, Lucas McDaniel, John While, Charla Wolverton, Debbie Pepelea, Elishia Griffin and Tim Taylor.

“Even with the new volunteers taking a case or two, our waitlist still hovers around 25 to 30 children awaiting a CASA volunteer,” CASA director Nikki Fuhrmeister said.

For more information, contact the Vigo County CASA office at 812-231-5658, email Nikki.
