Liquor stores hoping Super Bowl equals super sales

TERRE HAUTE — Optimism abounds for area alcohol retailers on the eve of the first-ever Super Bowl hosted in Indiana.

“We hope, but we don’t know,” said Matt Colglazier, director of media and promotions for Big Red Liquors, concerning an increase in sales because of the Super Bowl.

Terre Haute businessman Wayne Bower of Bower’s 7th and 70 Liquor said he is taking a “wait and see” attitude about sales in advance of the big game.

“If the Colts are in it, it’s an extra holiday,” Bower said.

Indiana doesn’t have too many New York Giants or New England Patriots fans, he pointed out. Alcohol sales noticeably increase, however, if there is a big game involving the Pacers, Colts, Indiana State or Indiana University, he said. “That’s when people get together.”Indiana’s Blue Laws, which prohibit the sale of alcohol on Sunday, are not much of a concern to Bower, who said alcohol will still be available at restaurants and Lucas Oil Stadium on the Sunday game day.

“They’ve got so much you can buy over there on the premises, that it doesn’t make that much difference,” Bower said of the no-Sunday sales law.

Colglazier said it will be interesting to see how the Super Bowl in Indianapolis affects alcohol sales around the state.

“We’ve never had an event like this,” he said. “We know some of the local airfields will be full of private jets, and we hope that on the way to and from Indianapolis to the outlying hotels, the people will stop at a store.”

The festive party atmosphere of hosting the premier football event has brought a lot of good energy to downtown Indianapolis, Colglazier said. Even if Hoosiers aren’t going to the big game, they are packing the downtown streets.

“It’s something we hope trends and carries into the weekend,” he said.

Big Red Liquors, which has nine stores in the Terre Haute area, as well as several in Bloomington and around the state, is planning some big sales for the weekend, he said.

At Bower’s 7th and 70, some college-age customers said Friday that they were planning to make their Super Bowl beer purchases on Saturday.
