Egg-cellent donation

Southern Indiana company makes donation to foodbank

TERRE HAUTE — The folks at Terre Haute Catholic Charities Foodbank weren’t walking on eggshells Thursday when a large donation arrived.

Instead, they were egg-static to receive more than 64,000 eggs that can be distributed to food insecure families throughout the Wabash Valley.

“We are extremely thankful that Wabash Valley Produce in Dubois has chosen to partner with us,” said agency director John Etling on Thursday as skids of carefully packaged eggs were offloaded into the foodbank warehouse. “Hoosiers really do care about Hoosiers. It sends a great message, especially since it’s leading up to Easter and all that holds for us in the faith community.”

It is the fifth year that Wabash Valley Produce has made the donation to the Terre Haute foodbank, which reaches more than 32,000 hungry individuals in seven counties through a network of 90 nonprofit agencies. Terre Haute Catholic Charities Foodbank is the single largest source of food programs in Clay, Greene, Knox, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties in west central Indiana.

Among the most needed items at food assistance organizations are sources of high quality protein, such as fresh eggs. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one large egg delivers six grams of protein and 13 essential nutrients such as choline, folate, iron and zinc. The USDA also concluded in 2011 that the average amount of cholesterol was 14 percent lower and vitamin D content was 64 percent higher than previously thought.

Foods high in protein are some of the most expensive items to provide, Etling said. When the food bank cannot provide protein items, the member agencies must purchase those items themselves, and that can strain finances.

“Any time we can access  Indiana agriculture and Indiana produce, it’s a great thing,” Etling said.
