Most-Fit Sycamore: Participants vie for bragging rights in fitness competition

TERRE HAUTE — Tires were flipping and metal flying Saturday morning, as Indiana State students vied for fitness bragging rights.

The inaugural Most-Fit Sycamore competition kicked off before 9 a.m. in Indiana State University Arena’s North Gym, with participants taking part in an eight-event fitness challenge.

Organizer Nate Brown, a kinesiology instructor at the university, said the idea was prompted by a similar contest at Ohio State University. Limited to students, faculty and staff for now, the group hopes to host another contest as part of this year’s homecoming festivities.

“They actually exceeded some of my expectations,” he said of the athletes participating.

Events included both bench press and squats for maximum repetitions, the tire flip, a half-mile run, a rope climb, an agility run, limbo, and a football throw for accuracy.

“Overall, I think we did very well for it being our first year,” he said, adding prizes were given for individual champions in both male and female categories, as well as team events.

Senior Dayne Hosier took home the men’s title after a morning spent winning nearly all of his events. The 21-year-old former Terre Haute North Vigo High School track and field athlete got 20 repetitions in one minute, bench pressing his weight of 175 pounds. Squatting 225 pounds, he likewise produced 20 repetitions in one minute.

“It’s definitely something to do for next year,” he said, indicating he’ll likely compete again.

But more than competition, the event allowed him to measure his own ability, he said.

“I didn’t necessarily look at it as (competition), it’s just kind of personal goals to see where I was at,” he said.

Freshman Monica Larsen, also a former Patriot athlete, won the women’s championship.

“My first competition ever,” the former high school basketball player and track athlete said.

Larsen completed 15 repetitions of the squat in one minute with 135 pounds of weight, and bench pressed half her body weight, 70 pounds, for 21 repetitions in the same time.

“I’ve been lifting since seventh grade,” she said, adding she’s excited to compete again.
