FARRINGTON, Ill. —
Two people are dead after a train collided with a passenger car this afternoon in Clark County, Ill.
Illinois State Police said a man and a woman were in the front seat of a white Pontiac Grand Am that was traveling south on Fern Lake Road in north eastern Clark County, a few miles north of Interstate 70. They were both pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.
Three children, who were in the back seat of the car, were transported to Union Hospital in Terre Haute, police said.
The car was struck in the passenger side by a train on a CSX railroad track at a remote, rural crossing.
The identities of those involved were not immediately known.
Illinois State Police, the Clark County Sheriff’s Department, Illinois Conservation officers, the Marshall Fire Department and Trans-Care responded to the incident, which took place just before 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time six miles west of West Terre Haute and about two miles west of the Indiana-Illinois border.
