Candidate says teachers ‘can be heard’

Mann running for 46th District seat

TERRE HAUTE — About 70 people attended a meet-and-greet campaign event Monday for James R. Mann II, who is running on the Democratic ticket for the Indiana House of Representatives District 46 seat.

In the primary, he is running against Democrats Charles “Chuck” Toth of Terre Haute and Larry D. Barker of Ellettsville.

Republican incumbent Bob Heaton is unopposed.

Mann, a social studies teacher at Terre Haute South Vigo High School, is running for office for the first time. Key issues in his campaign include support for public schools, labor/management relations and services to enable the elderly to stay in their own homes.

He hopes public school teachers mobilize to put some new faces in Indianapolis and help put a stop to changes that he believes have not been good for public education or students.

“Teachers are going to have to get united and realize they can make a difference. They can be heard,” Mann said in an interview.

Mann believes there’s too much standardized testing and too much top-down decision-making. Some public school districts are taking significant hits in funding for legislative reforms benefiting the few, he said.

Decisions about how best to educate children should be left to parents, classroom teachers, local school districts and elected school boards. “It doesn’t need to be decided by somebody in Indianapolis,” he said.

Parents also need to be better informed about the consequences of legislation being passed in Indianapolis, he said.

Mann met individually with supporters and then took questions for about 30 minutes.

He acknowledges he is an underdog in the race and appealed to those attending to assist him with his campaign. “I feel I have a good message,” he said.

Among those attending were several educators, including Pat Killeen, who addressed the audience and spoke on Mann’s behalf.

“I’m feeling a little beat up, bullied even,” Killeen said. “My job has been made much more difficult by decisions of people who seem to have lost touch with our true purpose in education — our students.”
