Brazil woman jailed after allegedly using brick as weapon

TERRE HAUTE — A Brazil woman has been arrested for allegedly hitting another woman in the head with a brick in a dispute over a girlfriend.

Erin French Russell, 24, appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 6 on Wednesday, where Judge Michael Lewis found probable cause for her arrest on charges of aggravated battery, criminal mischief and interfering with reporting a crime.

Detective Darren Long of the Terre Haute Police Department reported that officers were called to a residence in the 900 block of South Center Street at about 9 p.m. Tuesday where the alleged victim said that Russell came to her house, took her cell phone out of her hand and broke it, then hit her in the head three times with a brick.

Long said Russell told police she had been in a relationship with a female at the residence where the incident occurred. While the victim said she was trying to call police for help, Long said. Russell claimed the victim was only using her phone to text someone.

Lewis set 11 a.m. Friday as the deadline for formal charges to be filed. He set Russell’s bail at $50,000 with no 10 percent allowed.
