Consumer Reports gives Union state’s No. 2 safety ranking

TERRE HAUTE — Union Hospital Terre Haute has been named the second-safest hospital in Indiana, according to the August 2012 issue of “Consumer Reports.”

The information is also available to website subscribers at www.ConsumerReports.org/hospitalratings. All data, except infection information, come from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Infection data comes from individual states and the Leapfrog Group, which recently released its own hospital report.

Consumer Reports has safety ratings for 1,159 of the 6,268 hospitals in the United States. Hospitals that don’t have enough data, have data that is considered too old, have data discrepancies, or don’t report their data in a way that can be used, are excluded from the ratings, as are government hospitals and some specialty hospitals that don’t treat patients with conditions used in the Consumer Reports readmissions rating.

The safety score combines six categories of hospital safety into a score between 1 and 100. Those categories include Infections, Readmissions, Communication, Scanning, Complications and Mortality. Union Hospital Terre Haute placed second to St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital’s No. 1 rating.

“Safety is an extremely important focus of everyone here at Union”, said Scott Teffeteller, hospital president and CEO. “These scores provide us with great feedback for knowing that our safety initiatives are working.”

Union Hospital was recognized in 2011 as a Best Places to Work by Modern Healthcare Magazine; named to Solient Health Care’s Most Beautiful Hospital in America Top 20 List; recognized as a Best Places to Work by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce for the fourth year in a row; listed as one of Health Care’s Most Wired; and recognized by National Research Corp. as a Consumer Choice Award Winner for the Terre Haute area.
