Fireworks for Paris, other Illinois towns canceled

PARIS, Ill. — Hot, dry weather has now led at least a handful of Illinois towns to call off holiday fireworks.

Officials in Paris say that unless heavy rains fall before the holiday its fireworks are off. Harrisburg in bone-dry southern Illinois has cancelled its show. Plainfield southwest of Chicago has done the same.

The forecast calls for nothing but hot, dry weather.

Officials in Carbondale say they, too, are considering cancelling.

Plainfield Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton says the town has decided it’s too hot and dry to take a chance.

Paris, Plainfield and Harrisburg all plan to reschedule as soon as conditions allow.

Most of Illinois is in at least a moderate drought after weeks with little rain.
