Duke donates money to Red Cross

TERRE HAUTE — Duke Energy Foundation is helping to defray costs associated with the May 17 fire at Garfield Towers in Terre Haute through a $3,000 donation to the American Red Cross, Wabash Valley Chapter.

Many agencies responded to assist victims displaced by the fire:

• The city provided transportation from Garfield Towers to Terre Haute North Vigo High School.

• The Vigo County School Corp. provided the site for sheltering the evacuees.

• Local law enforcement offered around-the-clock security at the shelter.

• Catholic Charities and Terre Haute Ministries donated food for shelter residents.

• CVS Pharmacy replaced critical medications.

• The American Red Cross offered comfort, meals, snacks, mental health support, physical health support, hygiene items, cots, blankets and financial assistance for other basic needs to Garfield Tower residents who could not return to their apartments.

Approximately 120 people were transported to the shelter after evacuation. From there, many were able to connect with family and friends and did not require overnight stays. Thirty people spent the night at the shelter.

Throughout the evening, 150 snacks were served and 50 blankets were given to the shelter residents. Financial assistance for basic needs was available to those residents who could not return to their apartments the next day due to the fire damage.
