TERRE HAUTE — An architect has been hired for a project to add 23 housing units for the Terre Haute Housing Authority.
Steve Arnold of MMS-A/E in Terre Haute will design the renovation of two unused apartment buildings on Lockport Road south of Hulman Street. The project also will add seven housing units.
“This is the largest single project we’ll do for some time,” housing authority director Jeff Stewart said during Wednesday morning’s brief meeting.
Funding will come in part from $1.8 million in economic stimulus money that the housing authority received in the spring. Additional funds will come from the 2009 capital projects account, Stewart said.
“This seemed like the most efficient use of the money,” Stewart said of the federal stimulus funds.
The two housing buildings on Lockport Road have been unused for years. The current unit size of 900 square feet concerned housing authority board members as being small for a family; however, the architect will be asked to design the best use of the space.
The architect also will design the seven new units in the best way to fit on the property, whether that is in duplexes or as an apartment building.
The housing authority manages 868 units in the city, and there is a waiting list for available units.
Construction on the project is expected to start in the spring.
