CLINTON — Several groups are collaborating to stage a benefit concert and dinner Saturday for Clinton resident Sierra Cooper, the 21-year-old who is terminally ill with cystic fibrosis.
The show and mostaccioli dinner are being hosted by Wabash Valley rock ’n’ roll bands Mean Street and S.W.O. (Stone Wheel Orchestra), in cooperation with the Clinton Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Clinton Half Century Club, the Clinton American Legion Post 140 and the Country Music Makers.
The funds are being raised to assist Cooper with funeral and medical expenses. In early December, Cooper said doctors had given her two weeks to two months to live.
The benefit will be conducted at the Clinton Fraternal Order of Eagles,100 S. Water St., Clinton.
Organizers describe it as an “all-ages event and you do not have to be a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles to attend.” No smoking will be allowed in the facility the day of the event.
Advance tickets are $10 and include performances of three bands and a mostaccioli dinner. The day of the event, prices are $5 entry to see the bands and $6 for the dinner.
The benefit also will include a silent auction with merchandise donated from local businesses, community action groups, individuals, friends and family. Some of the donated items are from the Indianapolis Colts.
The doors will open at 4 p.m. with the dinner and silent auction. The Country Music Makers will perform on the club’s bar stage from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
S.W.O. will perform in the banquet hall from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mean Street will perform in the banquet hall from 10 p.m. to midnight.
Sierra’s mother, Sallie, said Monday, “We’re hoping to keep her well enough and alert so she can go. She has been in a lot of pain … She’s a trooper.”
Sierra does not have life insurance, and the goal is to raise enough money to cover her funeral costs. Any amount raised over that would be used for outstanding medical bills. Sierra has been in the hospital about 30 times this year and has undergone several stomach surgeries.
Sierra has an aggressive form of cystic fibrosis, a disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. She also has muscular dystrophy, which has affected movement in her legs.
Her mom lives with her, and Southern Care Hospice also helps care for her.
Donations also can be sent to the Sierra Cooper Benefit Fund in care of any First Financial bank location.
In Clinton, the address is First Financial, P.O. Box 220, Clinton IN 47842.
