High-speed chase results in felony allegations

TERRE HAUTE — A West Terre Haute man faces felony allegations stemming from a high-speed chase from Indiana State Police on Tuesday morning.

According to a media release issued by the Indiana State Police, Wilbur Ryan Adams, 23, of West Terre Haute, turned himself in at the Vigo County Jail at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday before being taken to court.

The arrest stems from an incident occurring about 3 a.m. Tuesday in which ISP Trooper Brandon Mullen reportedly clocked Adams’ automobile traveling 58 mph in a 30 mph zone on South Eighth Street near Voorhees Street. Adams allegedly made several turns before traveling west on Margaret Avenue at 54 mph in another 30 mph zone, then turning south on U.S. 41 and eventually westbound on Interstate 70. During this time, Mullen reported his lights and siren were activated. According to the report, Adams was in Interstate 70’s westbound lanes near the 6-mile marker when he pulled over for Mullen. While questioning Adams, Mullen noted signs of intoxication. After this was pointed out to Adams, he reportedly became nervous and accelerated his vehicle from the scene, knocking Mullen off balance. Another pursuit ensued at speeds near 115 mph before Adams attempted to exit Interstate 70 at Darwin Road and crashed there, leaving the wreckage and fleeing into the woods on foot. Officers searched the area for two hours but could not find him, according to the report.

Adams turned himself in at the Vigo County Jail at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and was taken to Division 5 Superior Court where allegations were read against him: operating a vehicle while intoxicated, class-D felony; operating while intoxicated endangering a person, class-A misdemeanor; resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, class-D felony; resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, class-A misdemeanor; battery on a law enforcement officer, class-D felony; and reckless driving, class-A misdemeanor.

Adams remained in the Vigo County Jail Wednesday with bail at $15,000, 10-percent acceptable.
