TERRE HAUTE — Three people face charges of receiving stolen property after they tried to sell a relative’s jewelry at the Treasure Hunters Roadshow at the Best Western Motel in Terre Haute.
Christopher Dugger, 24, Ashley Kernstein, 21, and Heidi Dill, 21, all of Terre Haute, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 1 on Friday, when their bond was set at $25,000 each with no 10 percent allowed.
Detective Clay White of the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department told Senior Judge Rhonda Oldham that police were called Thursday afternoon to a residence on West Zell Avenue for a reported burglary. The alleged victim said a small safe containing jewelry and important documents was the only thing taken from the home. The victim listed Dugger, who is a relative, as a possible suspect and described his vehicle to police.
About an hour later, police received a call from the victim, stating she had located her relative’s vehicle at the Best Western parking lot, and she could see her opened safe inside the vehicle.
Police went into the Treasure Hunters Roadshow and saw Dill, Dugger and Kernstein seated together at a table with some of the victim’s jewelry in front of them. They also found other jewelry in a bag with the suspects, and police found a receipt for $898 written to Dill for jewelry sold at the Roadshow, White stated.
Police arrested the trio, and impounded the vehicle. White said police will ask for a search warrant for the vehicle to look for additional evidence in the case.
A criminal history check shows that Dill has an attempted burglary case pending in Vigo Superior Court 3, while Dugger has a 2008 conviction for possession of paraphernalia and Kernstein has a 2008 conviction for possession of methamphetamine.
Judge Oldham found probable cause for their arrest on receiving stolen property, a class-D felony.
