Police arrest man for allegedly taking smokes

Staff report

TERRE HAUTE — A tip to police led to the arrest of a man who allegedly stole three cartons of cigarettes from a Wabash Avenue gas station.

Jeff D. Heyen, 28, of Terre Haute, was arrested Monday after a person approached an Indiana State Police trooper at a Dollar General store in Seelyville to say that he knew a man who was bragging about taking the cigarettes.

Trooper Charles McKee testified in Vigo Superior Court 3 on Tuesday that officers located Heyen in the Briar Ridge Mobile Home Park working on a vehicle that matched the description of a suspect vehicle from the Nov. 19 theft at the Circle K gas station in the 6200 block of Wabash Avenue. Officers were allowed to search a nearby residence and recovered a carton of cigarettes allegedly taken in the theft. A surveillance video from the Circle K also was viewed by police, and showed a suspect who matched Heyen’s appearance, McKee said.

Judge David Bolk found probable cause for Heyen’s arrest on a charge of class-D felony theft. He set bail at $10,000, with no 10 percent allowed, and continued the case to Thursday.
