Rose-Hulman Ventures offering free seminar on intellectual property

TERRE HAUTE — Partners James A. Coles and Anthony P. Filomena of the law firm of Bose McKinney & Evans LLP will be featured presenters at an intellectual property seminar from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Rose-Hulman Ventures in Terre Haute.

The free seminar will cover the topic “Software Patent: Oxymoron or Sound Business Practice? A Guide for Assessing Whether Patent Protection is Worthwhile.”

Rose-Hulman Ventures is at 100 South Campus Drive, off Indiana 46, on the east side of Terre Haute. Registration for the seminar will begin at 2 p.m.

The presenters will walk attendees through a process to help determine which inventions might be eligible or worthy of patents. They also will discuss copyright protection as an alternative to patents, including the advantages and disadvantages of each. Finally, the speakers will provide a brief history of software patent eligibility over the years to help illustrate the current state of patent confusion and will address the impact of the Bilski decision of 2008.

Coles is the co-chair of the Bose McKinney & Evans Intellectual Property Group and an influential leader on technology and business issues. He has vast experience with most types of intellectual property matters, including agreements involving intellectual property, and helps clients determine the breadth and value of their intellectual property assets through audit services and strategies for protecting and exploiting those assets.

Coles received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, has been honored as one of the institute’s honor alumni and serves on Rose-Hulman’s board of trustees. He earned his law degree from St. Louis University Law School. He is the founder of the Access Technology Across Indiana, a consortium of Indiana-based research institutions.

Filomena is a partner in the Intellectual Property Group and resident in the firm’s office in Raleigh, N.C. His diverse background in electrical engineering, computer science, business and law give him exceptional experience and equip him to address a variety of intellectual property issues for clients.

Filomena was an associate with Bose McKinney & Evans for several years before accepting a position as global software licensing manager for a large international integrated media and entertainment company.

Prior to pursuing his law degree, Filomena was chief systems engineer of the Air Force Mission Support System at Mitre Corp., a research specialist at Lockheed Missiles and Space Company and an engineering group leader at General Electric’s Space Systems Division.
