Terre Haute airport gets defibrillators

TERRE HAUTE — Casual conversation yielded a new asset at the Terre Haute International Airport, officials announced Monday.

Executive Director Dennis Wiss showed off three new automated external defibrillators purchased for the airport by Wabash Valley Asphalt with assistance from NGC Corp.

“This is a very good addition to the airport,” Wiss said, noting the facility has been attempting to acquire such devices for years.

Depending on the day, between 100 and 150 people travel in and out of the facility and restaurant area, he said. In the case of a heart attack, staff now will have the devices at their disposal while waiting for emergency responders to arrive, he said. The acquisition includes three units, two for the facility and one portable device for the grounds. All of the airport’s staff will be trained in their usage, Wiss said. “Quite honestly, we hope we never have to use them.”

The gift came as the result of airport officials and contractors discussing the need for defibrillators while working on the runway renovation, Wiss explained. Wabash Valley Asphalt provided the $7,900 needed for the devices, warranties and training, while NGC Corp. facilitated their acquisition.

“They’re a little pricey,” Wiss said, explaining that the facility has been trying to purchase defibrillators for years.

Roger Fulkerson of NGC, the airport’s engineering company on the runway project, said the purchase is a “win-win” for all involved because someday, it might be one of their workers who need the device. “I think it’s a great deal for the community,” he said, and thanked Wabash Valley Asphalt for the funds.

Jim Burdick, president of Wabash Valley Asphalt, said the company has been operating in Vigo County for 80 years and continuously seeks ways to help the community.
