City receives grant for 3rd Street median beautificaions project

TERRE HAUTE — The City of Terre Haute on Thursday was awarded a $365,000 landscaping and beautification grant for a project to construct new traffic medians, with low-lying plants and flowers, along Third Street.

The project would extend from Cherry Street to Poplar Street, said Ron Hinsenkamp, chief transportation planner for West Central Indiana Economic Development District.

The grant, from the Federal Highway Administration, is based on an 80/20 split, meaning the city will pay $65,000 to obtain $260,000 in grant funding. However, the project would likely not start until at least 2012.

“The federal money [under this grant] is not available until October 2012,” Hinsenkamp said.
