Authorities: Couple tried to sell gun on the street

TERRE HAUTE — A Carbon couple suspected of attempting to sell handguns on the street are being held in the Vigo County Jail on charges of possessing a handgun without a license and outstanding warrants.

Greg A. Miller, 43, and Phoebe R. Miller, 25, were arrested around 2 p.m. Monday after Terre Haute police received a report of someone trying to sell possibly stolen guns in the area of 21st Street and Cleveland Avenue.

During a hearing by video in Vigo Superior Court Division 6, Detective Troy Davis said when police responded to the area, the couple fled the scene in their vehicle. Police stopped the car and, based on a witness description, located two handguns in a case under a seat of the car.

Both Millers denied knowing that the guns were in the car.

Phoebe Miller stated during Tuesday afternoon’s hearing that the couple had recently purchased the car and did not know the weapons were in the vehicle.

Davis stated it was still unknown if the guns are stolen.

Judge Lewis noted the prosecutor’s office has 72 hours to file formal charges, and set the couple’s next hearing date for Friday morning.

He also found probable cause to hold both Millers on possession of a handgun without a license, a class-A misdemeanor.

He set bail at $5,000, with no 10 percent allowed because of the warrants. Greg Miller has two warrants from Clay County and a probation violation charge in Vigo County. Phoebe Miller has an outstanding warrant for burglary from Parke County.
