TERRE HAUTE — A Vigo County department has a new name — the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department.
The Vigo County Park Board in an unanimous vote Monday make the word “park” plural at the request of assistant superintendent Kara S. Kish.
“At the time the department was formed, there was only one park, but now we have many other facilities that should be recognized,” she told the board.
The park department oversees Fowler and Prairie Creek parks; Hawthorn Park and JI Case Wetland Wildlife Area; Markle Mill Park; R. Kermit Flesher Memorial State Nature Preserve; Lee Fields Park; and George & Ida Smith Park.
The parks department also will oversee a large wetland and wildlife habitat near the Wabash River, called the Wabashiki State Fish & Wildlife Area. In addition, the park department may add a park for the Wabash & Erie Canal Lock No. 47 in Riley, pending approval of a state grant.
