Crowd packs The Woods campus for Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS — Streams of pink flowed through a human mass Saturday morning as thousands gathered at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College for the 13th annual Susan G. Komen Wabash Valley Race for the Cure.

Kim Eads watched as grandparents pushed babies in strollers past her registration tent alongside Le Fer Hall’s striking architectural structure.

“Excellent,” she said of the 50-something degree morning in which 300 people registered to join the nearly 3,000 participants there. “I think everybody is having a good time.”

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization dates back to 1982, when Nancy Brinker fulfilled a promise to her sister, Susan Komen, who was dying of cancer. According to the organization’s Web site, Komen for the Cure is now one of the world’s largest grassroots networks of breast cancer survivors and activists and has raised nearly $1 billion for research toward finding a cure for the disease. This year’s theme was “Saving Lives With Change.”

Candace Kelley mingled amid the crowd west of Le Fer Hall, where sponsors packed tents and participants browsed.

“The turnout looks great,” Kelley said, noting members of her family have been affected by the disease. “It’s definitely a worthwhile cause and it seems like a lot of fun.”

Cancer survivors were announced as they walked in a line toward a path for the walk and run. Along with the name of each, the number of years they’d been in remission was included, some of which were as high as 35.

Meanwhile, motorcycles led a procession of racers participating in the 5K race, and families walked in conversation, ranging in dress from shorts to hooded sweatshirts, upon which were slogans such as “This One’s for the Girls” to “Cure.”

And while officially the day’s goal involved breast cancer, hunting season on any form of the disease seemed open.

Lisa Rupska participated in the run, taking first place in the women’s 40-49-year-old division.

“I like to run and support the cause,” she said, adding her father passed away from cancer in March. “Miss him,” she said.
