UPDATE: Eastern Greene County suffers heavy storm damage

Bloomington area storms produce power outages, heavy debris in roadway

GREENE COUNTY — At 2:30 a.m. today the Greene County Sheriff’s Department reported heavy structural damage to several residences on Indiana 43 from Solsberry to Hendricksville in eastern Greene County.

This resulted in heavy debris in the roadway including trees and power lines being down, according to the early-morning Indiana State Police news release.

Nearly 1,000 homes in Greene County were without power early this morning, a Greene County Daily World report stated. Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC crews hoped to restore power to those homes by nightfall today, the newspaper stated.

Indiana 43 will be closed from Solsberry to Hendricksville until further notice, the State Police said. Emergency crews were en route to survey the damage earlier this morning. No injuries had been reported by midday today.

At 1:45 a.m., Bloomington area residents reported a tree blocking the roadway on Indiana 45 at Hinds Road in southwestern Monroe County.

Power outage also was reported in Stanford.

Also a large shed was reported in the roadway at Vernal Pike and Hartstriaght Road. Fire and Monroe County emergency crews responded.

A Wabash Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross official in Terre Haute said that agency also was responding to the situation.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis is blaming straight-line winds and not a tornado for damaging several homes and other buildings in southwestern Indiana, including eastern Greene County.

Meteorologist Dave Tucek says descriptions of overnight storm damage reported in Greene County suggest that homes and buildings in the county southwest of Bloomington were damaged by straight-line winds of about 70 mph.

He says the weather service doesn’t plan to survey storm damage in the area.

Tucek says the weather system that brought heavy rains to the state late Tuesday and early today has moved east of the state along with unseasonably mild air.

Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
