Terre Haute, Vectren working on ‘Bark Park’

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute will soon be home to a new “Bark Park” on Dresser Drive along the Wabash River, thanks to a collaborative effort between Vectren and the city.

The three-acre site, owned by Vectren, is located at the north end of Fairbanks Park.

Negotiations are still under way between Vectren and the city, but officials hope to open the “Bark Park” or dog park by late summer, said Pat Martin, city planner.

The property would be leased to the city for a “nominal fee,” said Brad Ellsworth, president of Vectren North.

Both Martin and Ellsworth attended Wednesday’s kickoff for 2013 Year of the River.

According to Martin, Vectren will cap the site with two to three feet of topsoil, which will be part of an environmental restrictive covenant that will be agreed to with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

Once that is completed, the city would then pay for fencing around the site, Martin said.

Ellsworth noted that the gas plant formerly located at the site dated back to the early 1900s, and “environmental issues weren’t as closely watched back then as they are now.” Remediation work has been done at the site, he said, but in addition, the soil cap would be completed.

Ellsworth said Vectren is “happy to see it get used. It should be a nice addition” to Fairbanks Park.

Mayor Duke Bennett said the bark park has been under discussion for several years and he hopes to see the project completed this year.
