TERRE HAUTE —
Judy Anderson will serve as president of the Vigo County Board of Commissioners in 2013, with newly elected commissioner Brad Anderson serving as secretary of the board.
Commissioners held a reorganizational meeting Monday.
Brad Anderson was placed on several committees, some positions of which had been held by Paul Mason, who Brad Anderson defeated in November. Mason is now serving as the county building inspector.
Anderson, a Realtor, will serve on the Vigo County Plan Commission, the Emergency Planning Commission and Emergency Management Agency, the County Building Commission and Building Inspection Board, which oversees Mason’s position, and as the commissioner who will attend Terre Haute International Airport Authority meetings.
“These appointments that I am taking will help me learn what is going on in this position countywide,” Anderson said. “Being involved with zoning will help me, and the airport authority is something I need to learn about and work with the city on that,” he added.
Anderson, a former member of the Vigo County Council, said he is ready for his new role as a county administrator rather than fiscal oversight only
“This is more management than just budgetary issues, with more contracts and road issues, which I have experience with [from] my past work for the Indiana Department of Transportation, so I do want to be involved with that,” Brad Anderson said.
Commissioners reappointed Rick Burger to the Vigo County Redevelopment Commission, which oversees the county’s industrial parks. Burger was also elected this year to serve on the Vigo County Council. County Attorney Michael Wright said Burger’s appointment is not a lucrative position, as board members are not paid.
“We got an opinion on his appointment from [Indianapolis law firm] Ice Miller which stated in their opinion it did not create a problem” from state law or the state constitution, Wright said.
President Judy Anderson said in past years, commissioners have had large projects under development, such as construction of Canal Road which linked to the state 641 bypass or renovation of the county courthouse.
In addition, commissioners previously obtained funds from the county’s Economic Development Income Tax for a large paving project to bring major paved roads up to good condition countywide.
The year of 2013 will likely be a year of working to maintain existing services, she said. Commissioners, she said, previously hired a firm that is reviewing the county’s telephone bills to look for cost savings. Such measures will likely be considered for other budget items, she said.
“We will work to maintain what we have and look for cost savings and hope that the [economic] times get better. Right now there is no extra money, so doing more with less will continue to be our motto,” Judy Anderson said.
