Baby New Year arrives

Aralynn Grace Fagg claims title of Vigo County’s first baby of the year

TERRE HAUTE — The first baby born in Vigo County arrived late Jan. 1 — but a few days earlier than expected.

Aralynn Grace Fagg weighed 6 pounds, 5 ounces and was 21 inches long when she arrived at 9:32 p.m. Tuesday at Union Hospital in Terre Haute.

First-time parents Jaclynn Cooper and Dustin Fagg welcomed their daughter as a sign that 2013 will be a good year. The young couple has been together for five years, since their high school days, and they’ve been living on their own for two years.

“It’s actually really exciting. I feel really privileged,” Jaclynn said of having Vigo County’s first baby of the year. “We get to start off this year with  beautiful baby girl.”

Jaclynn said she went into labor Tuesday morning, with her water breaking around 11:30 a.m.

Great-grandmother Jill Ferres was in the hospital room with her newest family member on Wednesday afternoon.

“I have 11 grandchildren, and Jaclynn is the oldest,” Ferres said. “Now they go from age 20 to newborn.”

There is a special meaning behind the infant’s name, Jaclynn said. Aralynn means “beautiful melody” or “with song,” and Grace means “God’s will.”

“The best way to show grace to God is with song,” Jaclynn said, predicting that her tiny daughter will grow up to be a singer.

The child has already shown she wants to be a celebrity by making a grand entrance with media attention, her mother pointed out.
