Pair faces charges in theft of truck, police chase

TERRE HAUTE — An alleged vehicle theft and subsequent chase landed two people in jail late Saturday afternoon.

According to a news release issued by the Indiana State Police, Lee Edward Bemis, 25, Terre Haute, and Kristina Gruner, 27, Clinton, were arrested just before 5 p.m. Saturday on allegations stemming from the alleged theft of a vehicle.

Vigo County dispatchers documented a call before 4 p.m. reporting a stolen 2002 Chevrolet 2500 pick-up truck was possibly traveling south on Indiana 63 from Vermillion County.

ISP Trooper Jason Schoffstall reportedly attempted to stop the vehicle on U.S. 41 at Eighth Avenue in Terre Haute, but the truck turned right onto Eighth Avenue and continued west to First Street, where it crashed through the fence of a nearby business and traveled into a wooded area near the Wabash River.

Indiana State University police, Terre Haute City Police and Vigo County sheriff’s deputies assisted in a 45-minute ground search for the two who had reportedly abandoned the truck and fled. Officers reported finding the suspects lying in the snow near the Wabash River.

Bemis and Gruner were both arrested on class-D felony allegations of vehicle theft and class-D felony allegation of resisting law enforcement. Gruner was also discovered to be wanted on a warrant from the Terre Haute City Court for conversion and trespass, police said.
