Vigo Dems swear in officials

TERRE HAUTE — A crowd of well-wishers packed into the courtroom Friday as local Democrats were sworn into office.

Vigo County Superior Court Judge Phil Adler issued oaths of office to seven incoming county officials at 4 o’clock inside the courtroom of Division 3. The Vigo County Courthouse’s third floor was full as well with friends and family joining the candidates they supported in November’s general election.

Joe Etling, chairman of the Vigo County Democratic Party, congratulated incumbents and newcomers alike, remarking at the work and effort required to win an election. In addition to those coming into office, he offered words of thanks to Pat Mansard, who is retiring from the position of Vigo County Clerk after a total of 30 years’ public service.

“We owe a debt of gratitude, not only to her, but to her husband Bill, for all the work she’s done on behalf of candidates over the years,” he said.

Mansard, who is being succeeded by fellow Democrat David Crockett, returned thanks to the community.

“I’m honored to have served you all these years,” she said.

Candidates were issued their oaths, which included a pledge to uphold both the U.S. and Indiana constitutions.

Incoming Vigo County Councilman At-Large Rick Burger reiterated his campaign goal of “earning the position” to which he was elected.

“I want to create an atmosphere of partnership; that’s one of my goals,” he said, adding that he intends to continue the civic work he’s been doing his entire career with Duke Energy. “There’s a lot of potential in Vigo County. I love this community.”
