Van flees scene after hitting vehicles

SEELYVILLE — Police are seeking the driver of a white van that fled the scene of a four-vehicle accident that occurred Wednesday morning while a Vigo County school bus was stopped on U.S. 40 about one mile east of Seelyville.

Indiana State Police said that at shortly before 8 a.m., a Vigo County School Corp. bus was stopped in the right lane of westbound U.S. 40 with the stop arm deployed to pick up a student. A car driven by Shari Smith, Brazil, was stopped next to the bus in the westbound passing lane. Behind Smith was an auto  driven by Kent Pettet, Indianapolis.

As those vehicles were stopped, a white van struck Pettet’s car in the rear, forcing Pettet’s car into Smith’s. Police said the driver of the van, believed to be a white male, backed up his vehicle and struck a pickup truck driven by Damion Brown of Brazil. The van driver then accelerated forward, again striking Pettet’s car and again forcing it into Smith’s.

The van driver then fled the scene, westbound on U.S. 40.

Brown suffered internal pain and sought his own medical treatment.

Total estimate of damages to the vehicles was estimated at $8,000-$10,000.

ISP officers are seeking information from the public that may help identify the white van and its driver. The vehicle might be a Chevy Astro van that could have extensive front and rear damage.

Anyone with information is urged to contact ISP Trooper Bill Bradbury at the Putnamville Post, (765) 653-4114.

The Putnamville Post had five troopers on the scene within one minute of the report but were unable to locate the van after an extensive search, according to an ISP press release.
