Downed phone lines close intersection; hundreds lose power from storm.

EAST GLENN — Dozens of Vigo County residents remained without power Monday evening after an electrical storm rolled through the area in the late afternoon.

A downed telephone line in the East Glenn area prompted officials to close the eastbound lane of U.S. 40 at Chamberlain Road early in the evening. Traffic was diverted on sidestreets up to Old Maple Avenue and then back to U.S. 40.

Vigo County dispatch also reported several downed power lines in the aftermath of the storm.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m., 72 Vigo County Duke Energy customers remained without power. The largest group of affected customers were in northern Vigo County in Otter Creek Township near Park and Lafayette avenues. Other outages were reported in the city of Terre Haute and along U.S. 40 on the east side of town.

At 6 p.m., Rick Burger, a Duke spokesman, reported about 250 customers had been without power.
