Park board: Fireworks show’s future uncertain

TERRE HAUTE — It’s not yet clear whether Terre Haute’s nixed Fourth of July fireworks show will take place later this year or simply be canceled altogether.

Members of the Terre Haute Park Board met Wednesday afternoon and discussed the question, but no conclusion was reached. The city has spent about $1,800 on a deposit for the show, said Park Superintendent Eddie Bird. The entire show would cost about $24,000 if it would take place, he said.

Aerial Arts Fireworks of Brazil conducts the show for the city. It did not take place this year due to the excessively dry conditions in the area where the fireworks are launched.

n Also Wednesday, the board heard plans for Saturday’s big “On the Banks of the Wabash Community Band Festival” at Fairbanks Park.

The festival, which will run from 2 to 9 p.m., will feature community bands from all around the area, including Montgomery County, Brazil, Greenwood, Marshall, Ill., Covington, Bloomington and Terre Haute.

The event will be free of charge and will include food vendors, a misting station and tents for shade.

“Every hour there will be another band,” said Jim Chesterson, representing the Terre Haute Community Band at the meeting.

In the event of rain, the festival will take place in the YMCA building, also in Fairbanks Park. However, the forecast calls for “hot and dry” conditions Saturday, Chesterson noted.

The audience at the festival can expect to hear marches, medleys of tunes from Broadway and motion pictures and music written especially for band performances, according to a news release.

This will be the second year for the event, Chesterson said.
