3 injured in Rosedale standoff

2 police and suspected shooter reportedly hurt

ROSEDALE — This normally quiet, southern Parke County town was the scene of gunshots and an intense police standoff Sunday afternoon.

Two law enforcement officers were wounded in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect at a home on South Main Street in Rosedale. Several blocks around the home were sealed off for several hours Sunday evening.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Joe Watts, speaking from the scene, said the alleged shooter also was injured during the incident but was in good condition. His injuries may have been caused by glass objects inside the home, Watts said.

About 4 p.m. Sunday, a medical emergency was reported at the home at 74 S. Main St. A domestic battery complaint also was reported from the same residence at the same time, Watts said.

A deputy town marshal and an Indiana State Police trooper soon arrived at the home.

“As soon as the trooper began to exit his vehicle, shots rang out from the home,” Watts said. The trooper’s car was struck multiple times, causing broken glass and a flat tire.

Both the deputy marshal and the trooper returned fire and the alleged gunman continued to fire what was believed to be a high-powered rifle at the officers, Watts said.

The trooper and the deputy marshal both received injuries to their arms, but continued to work the scene, Watts said. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening and were possibly caused by shrapnel from the shots or broken glass, he said.

Watts said no additional shots were fired after the initial exchange of gunfire.

By about 6 p.m., an ISP SWAT team had surrounded the home, and a little more than an hour later, the suspected gunman, a 19-year-old male, surrendered, Watts said. He was taken to Union Hospital in Terre Haute.

An elderly man who reportedly suffered heart trouble during the initial domestic disturbance, was taken to Union Hospital in Clinton for treatment.

It was initially believed the suspected gunman was living at the home with his girlfriend and her family, police said.

The names of those involved were not being immediately released.

Indiana State Police crime scene detectives were working the scene late Sunday evening. “Basically, our whole investigative division from the Putnamville [ISP] post is here at the scene,” Watts said about 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
