Shooting suspect remains in jail after skirmish

TERRE HAUTE — A shooting suspect remained in jail Friday evening on allegations stemming from a fight on the city’s north side.

Detective Ed Thompkins of the Terre Haute Police Department confirmed that evening that Clarence Eugene Sandifer, 36, was arrested Friday for his alleged involvement in a Sunday night shooting. The investigation remains ongoing and Sandifer is scheduled to appear in Vigo County Superior Court Division 3 Monday at 10 a.m.

According to the Vigo County Jail’s automated inmate information system, Sandifer is being held without bail for allegations of attempted murder and aggravated battery.

The shooting reportedly occurred after 8 p.m. Sunday at a home in the 2000 block of North 13th Street near Maple Avenue. Investigators report that Sandifer was allegedly involved in a domestic dispute with a woman earlier that day, and that woman called the shooting victim to come to her assistance.

The victim and a friend helped the allegedly battered woman get away from Sandifer to a safe location. Sandifer is believed to have gone to the shooting victim’s house later in the day and barged in while the victim and others were inside watching television. The victim reportedly escorted Sandifer out of the house, and the two began wrestling in the yard.

During the struggle, Sandifer is accused of shooting the victim in the chest with a small caliber handgun. A witness inside the home went into the yard and tackled Sandifer, who dropped the weapon and fled the scene.

The shooting victim was taken to Union Hospital in Terre Haute, and later transferred to an Indianapolis hospital.
