Police believe man was dead before 6-hour standoff

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man involved in a six-hour standoff with police on Friday died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Vigo County Coroner Dr. Roland Kohr ruled suicide as the manner of death for Mark Alan Lee, 26, of North 131⁄2 Street.

Detective Troy Davis of the Terre Haute Police Department said police now believe Lee was dead inside a northside house before police arrived shortly after 1 p.m.

“It appeared he had been dead for several hours,” he said.

Davis said Lee posted a suicide note on social network Facebook, and friends who saw the posting notified police that Lee was suicidal.

“One of his friends saw it, knew he was serious, and said he had a gun,” Davis said of Lee.

The standoff ended after police forced entry into the home around 7 p.m.

Davis said police made multiple attempts to contact Lee, including by telephone and loudspeaker, and shot tear gas into the home in an attempt to get Lee to surrender.

“We wanted to take every measure possible to try to get him to come out to us before we made entry,” Davis said, noting that police had no idea if the man would try to shoot an officer when they made entry.

Davis also said that police found no evidence of criminal activity when they entered the home.

The neighborhood around the home was evacuated for several hours during the standoff for the safety of the neighbors.
