Terre Haute city parks to undergo restroom upgrades

TERRE HAUTE — Upgrades are in store for a city park’s restrooms with work to begin Monday.

Terre Haute City Parks and Recreation Department spokesman Billy Hubbard said officials plan to bring the facilities at Collett Park up to American Disabilities Act standards as they repair damage from an arson in May.

Superintendent Eddie Bird said the total project will cost $68,800 between construction and electrical work as significant damage was sustained to the building’s wiring. Roger and Kevin Maher will perform the construction remodeling and Sycamore Engineering has already completed some of the necessary electrical work, Bird said.

Hubbard said the department hopes to have work completed by October 6, in time for Old Fashioned Days that weekend.

“We’re taking some extra steps to make sure it’s vandal proof and fire proof,” he said of the rennovation made necessary by a fire set inside late May. But in addition to repairs, the project is designed to make the facilities more handicap accessible from entances to fixtures. “So we’re rennovating it, but we’re also upgrading it.”
