Man critical after suffering burns from vehicle fire

TERRE HAUTE — A local man remained in critical condition Sunday evening after a vehicle fire earlier that morning.

According to staff at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis, Darrell L. Mayfield, 29, remained in critical condition in its burn unit Sunday night after being transported there by air from Regional Hospital of Terre Haute.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department reports that Mayfield was driving a pickup truck west on Curry Road early Sunday morning when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway and traveled through a field.

The vehicle reportedly continued into a residential property in the 7000 block of Ridgeway Lane where it struck a tree and burst into flames.

A passerby, Dave Moize, discovered the blaze about 1:37 a.m., initially believing it to be a bonfire, according to a report issued by the department.

Moize reportedly found Mayfield lying outside his vehicle, his shirt on fire. Moize extinguished the flames and called 911.

According to the report, Mayfield suffered burns to his upper extremities and was first taken to Regional Hospital of Terre Haute, then flown to Wishard Hospital.
