Silver Alert denied in search for Valley businessman

Clay County man missing since Friday

TERRE HAUTE — The recent disappearance of a Clay County man does not meet criteria for issuing a Silver Alert, according to police on Tuesday.

David M. Schroeder, 56, was reported missing by his family to the Terre Haute Police Department on Friday, the same day he was last seen in downtown Terre Haute. Information about Schroeder was entered into a national database and distributed to all law enforcement agencies after the initial report was filed, and a trace of his cell phone activity was also initiated by police.

“Every effort has been made to locate Mr. Schroeder, including efforts to request a Silver Alert,” said THPD Assistant Chief Shawn Keen in a news release issued Tuesday. “Unfortunately, our request for the issuance of a Silver Alert has been denied by the state Amber/Silver Alert System.”

The basis for the Silver Alert denial rests with the lack of a doctor stating that Schroeder could be a danger to himself or the public because of physical or mental impairment or because of lack of medication, or stating that he cannot find his way home without assistance from police due to mental impairment.

“Mr. Schroeder’s doctor is unable to attest to either of these qualifying statements in this case,” Keen stated.

Schroeder’s son has told the Tribune-Star that the missing man has a heart condition and requires medication.

Keen said Tuesday morning that no tips had been received by THPD about possible locations for Schroeder.

However, at least one tip about a possible sighting Schroeder was relayed to the Paris (Ill.) Police Department on Tuesday afternoon after a person reported seeing a man who resembled Schroeder holding a sign outside a McDonald’s along Illinois 150. Paris Police told the Tribune-Star that they were tracking down that tip.

David M. Schroeder is described as about 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing 230 pounds, with salt and pepper hair and a short pony tail. He has blue eyes and a goatee. He was driving a green 2000 Ford Ranger extended cab, flare-side truck, license plate number 1271275, according to a vehicle description posted by family on Facebook.

Anyone who might have seen the missing man or his truck since Friday can call THPD at 812-238-1661.
