‘Dancing’ winner finds CHANCES ‘amazing’

TERRE HAUTE — The 2012 winner of Dancing with the Terre Haute Stars, Amy Anderson, began fundraising in January.

She organized baked sales, garage sales, a 50-50 raffle, a quilt raffle and she even coordinated a football camp. She organized fundraising events every month “and toward the end I was doing something every week,” she said. “I’m very competitive.”

Anderson took first place in the sixth annual Dancing with the Terre Haute Stars event Friday. Bernice Helman was second, and Mike Roberts third.

Winners are chosen based on whoever raises the most money, although participants earned points for their dancing.

Anderson is a mortgage loan officer at First Financial Bank in Vermillion and Parke counties in Indiana and southern Vermilion County, Ill.

Participating in the fundraiser for CHANCES for Indiana Youth “was amazing,” Anderson said. “The more I raised, the more I got to know about CHANCES and how much it does for the community.”

In the program, she danced the Hustle with Brandon Halleck, who is CHANCES executive director. “It was a lot of fun … and a lot harder than it looked,” she said.

She praised the efforts of the 11 other dancers who also worked hard to raise funds.

Nearly 1,040 people attended this year’s fundraiser at Hulman Center, which grossed more than $126,000. Last year, the event grossed $117,000.

The program serves as a fundraiser for CHANCES for Indiana Youth, a nonprofit agency that provides programs aimed at keeping youth away from drugs, alcohol and tobacco.

First Financial Bank was the title sponsor of Dancing with the Terre Haute Stars.
