Carjacking earns man 7-year sentence

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man arrested in connection with a March 2009 carjacking and robbery has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Anthony Earl Cross, 40, has already served most of his sentence, however, and could be released from prison in less than five months.

Cross appeared Monday morning in Vigo Superior Court 6 where Judge Michael Lewis accepted a plea agreement that had a five-year sentence for class-C felony robbery as a lesser included offense of class-B felony robbery. Four years of that sentence were to be served in prison with one year suspended to formal probation. Cross also agreed to testify truthfully and give a cleanup statement about the carjacking in any future court proceedings.

After credit is given for time already served in jail, Cross has about 148 days left to serve on that sentence.

In an unrelated case, Cross was sentenced to an additional two years in prison for violating in-home detention. That sentence has already been served while he has been in jail awaiting trial.

Two misdemeanor cases against Cross that were pending in Terre Haute City Court have been dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Cross was one of three people arrested following an incident on South 12th Street in which a man was robbed and shot in the abdomen. A December trial date is pending for Tony England, who has been accused of shooting the victim. Defendant Melissa Dawn Howe has already pleaded guilty to robbery in the case and received an eight-year prison sentence.
