Woman crossing road struck, killed Monday night on 3rd Street

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute woman has died from injuries suffered when she was struck by two vehicles while crossing South Third Street on Monday night. She reportedly was walking home from a convenience store.

The woman, Tina Ladd, 44, sustained multiple blunt force trauma injuries to her chest and abdomen, and injuries to her extremities, said Vigo County Coroner Dr. Roland Kohr, who conducted an autopsy Tuesday at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

The accident occurred at about 10:30 p.m. near Oak Street as Ladd was attempting to cross the six-lane highway.

Terre Haute Police investigating the accident found that the driver of the pickup truck that struck Ladd had a suspended license from Illinois.

The second motorist left the scene, but turned herself in at police headquarters at about 1 a.m. Tuesday.

The names of the two motorists involved in the accident were not available Tuesday afternoon.

THPD Assistant Chief Shawn Keen said investigators found that Ladd had left her apartment on Fifth Street to go to the Jiffy Mini Mart on the west side of Third Street to purchase an item. The woman was on her way back across Third Street, Keen said, when she went into the northbound lanes and was struck by the truck, which was traveling in the center lane. The injuries Ladd received from that impact were serious enough to cause death, Kohr said.

The truck stopped after the impact, but Ladd’s body was propelled into another lane where she was struck by a second vehicle, which left the scene, police said.

Keen said that at about 1 a.m., a woman, claiming to be a witness to the accident, came to THPD headquarters to speak to police about the incident. When officers checked her car, they found damage matching debris from the accident scene. Keen said the woman then told police that she had been driving the second car involved in the incident, but did not know that she had hit a person.

The truck driver was cited for driving while suspended, which is an infraction, Keen said. Investigators found that the man’s license was suspended because, in Illinois, he had received two driving infractions within a 24-month period while he was younger than 21.

Chief Deputy Rob Roberts of the Vigo County Prosecutor’s Office said that because the pickup truck driver’s action in Monday night’s incident was not considered criminal, and his Illinois driving status was not suspended because of criminal action, no additional charge beside driving while suspended will be filed. The man now resides in Indiana.

Roberts said he has researched the actions of the second driver who left the scene of the accident. Because that person did eventually report the accident to police, no charge is pending at this time, he said. However, the investigation continues.
