Multi-vehicle crash closes intersection

TERRE HAUTE — Multiple injuries to motorists were reported in a five-vehicle crash this morning that closed the intersection of 13th and Crawford streets.

A witness at the scene told the Tribune-Star that the driver of a Ford Mustang was rescued from her vehicle after it burst into flames as a result of the collision.

A Terre Haute Police Department employee driving an unmarked THPD car was also involved in the crash.

Indiana State Police troopers and THPD officers responded to the crash site, along with Terre Haute Fire and Rescue.

Witness Dean Dickison said he was at B&B Foods getting items out of the rear of his parked vehicle when the crash occurred. Dickison said a pickup truck was southbound on 13th Street at a high rate of speed when he crashed into a line of vehicles stopped at the traffic light at the intersection.

The truck first struck the Mustang, pushing it forward into other vehicles. A passenger car, a small pickup truck and the city-owned police car were damaged in the chain reaction crash.

The Mustang was pushed into the center of the intersection. It sustained heavy damage to its rear and front ends. The black pickup truck traveled through the intersection to the left, rounding the corner and ending up across the northeast curb about 40 yards from the intersection.

The intersection was littered with debris and vehicle parts from the crash.

Dickison said that people from B&B Foods responded with fire extinguishers to put out the car fire. He credited B&B’s Jim Isles with breaking out the Mustang’s window with his hands so that the driver could be pulled out of the heavily damaged car.
