New Historic National Road cookbook out in November

TERRE HAUTE — Recipes from across the country make for an eclectic tale of the tastes.

Author Patricia McDaniel said her latest creation, The Historic National Road Yard Sale Cookbook, Vol. IV., is headed to the press and copies should be available by November. The cookbook features recipes from along U.S. 40, the Historic National Road, celebrating the kitchens past and present of six states from Maryland through Illinois. This year, she said, special tribute will be paid the Land of Lincoln.

“Every year I pick a state and the front and the back of the cookbook are dedicated to it,” she explained.

But recipes come from all over, including Clay County, with Kelly and Becky Murphy of The Harmony Diner contributing “Baked Spaghetti” and “Trash Can Stew.”

Brazil’s Joyce Smith contributed “How to Sugar Cure Meat” and the Wabash Valley’s Marci Goldman submitted “Classic Sabbath Chloent,” a Jewish recipe for bread.

McDaniel, owner of Old Storefront Antiques in Dublin, began the cookbook project while organizing the Historic National Road Yard Sale, which crosses state lines each spring. And, as in the past, this year’s product includes submissions from the Inn at Boonsboro and Turn The Page Bookstore, both owned by author Nora Roberts and her husband Bruce Wilder in Maryland.

McDaniel said about 30 of the 350 recipes come from Indiana’s Wabash Valley, with photographs and historical anecdotes interspersed throughout. A recipe for “Mile High Bologna Pie” has been offered by Boos Butcher Company in Illinois, a family business now 125 years old.

With multiple editions under her belt, McDaniel said she’s happy to see so many repeat customers pre-ordering this year’s book. Traveling about to find the recipes makes for enjoyable research, she added.

“It’s a lot of fun,” she said.
