Bedford woman dies in Tuesday evening crash on I-70

TERRE HAUTE — A Lawrence County woman died in a snow-induced crash on westbound Interstate 70 in Putnam County on Tuesday evening.

The 5:30 p.m. crash involved a semi-tractor trailer and a 2000 Pontiac, and the Indiana State Police at Putnamville report that the driver of the car, 36-year-old Tiffany Ann Mikel, of Bedford, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Trooper Jonathan Cumbie reported that the Pontiac was attempting to merge onto I-70 from the 41-mile marker westbound on-ramp. As the vehicle moved too fast for road conditions into traffic, the driver lost control and spun in the roadway. The semi, a 2012 White International, attempted to slow, but did not have the space needed. The semi struck the car on the driver’s side in a T-bone collision, sending the car into the median. The semi driver, 41-year-old Efren Barragan-Sanchez, of Mexico, also lost control of his rig and crashed into a guardrail on the north side of the road. He received no injuries.

I-70 was shut down for about 15 minutes. Westbound I-70 was then restricted to one lane for the next three hours until about 10:30 p.m. while investigators completed their work.

Police report that neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in this crash.

Assisting agencies included the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, the Cloverdale Police Department, along with Cloverdale Fire and Operation Life Medics.
