Possible abduction alarms authorities

Incident captured by security cameras

TERRE HAUTE — Authorities remained on alert Thursday evening after reports of a forcible abduction.

According to a release issued by the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, a female was observed running from the parking lot of Indiana State University Married Housing, 101 Crawford St., about 10:08 a.m. Thursday. She was reportedly being chased by a male. Both parties are described as white, but possibly of Middle Eastern descent.

The chase reportedly took the two across Crawford Street and into the parking lot of the Vigo County Juvenile Center, where the female was reportedly banging on the facility’s back kitchen door. According to the release, the male “forcibly lifted the struggling female off her feet and was seen forcibly loading her into a silver Ford minivan (possibly a Windstar) with tinted windows and a luggage rack on the roof.”

The female reportedly fought throughout the incident, kicking the driver’s side door of the van as it closed. The van is believed to have left that facility, heading north on U.S. 41. Security cameras from the Vigo County Juvenile Center captured the abduction from multiple angles.

The male abductor appeared to be in his 20s or 30s, wore an untucked white T-shirt, blue jeans, and dark reddish brown boots. The female victim also appeared to be in her 20s or 30s, had dark hair pulled up off the collar, and was wearing a red shirt, covered by a dark, hooded, long-sleeve jacket, with dark pants, and dark shoes.

The identity of, or possible relationship between, the suspects remained unknown Thursday evening.

Anyone observing the suspect vehicle should immediately call 911. The Indiana State University Police also can be reached at 812-237-5555.
