Old Sullivan school clean-up grant approved by state

SULLIVAN — Sullivan Mayor Clint Lamb announced today that the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) approved the city’s request for funding to assist in the demolition and clean up of the old Central Elementary School location in dontown Sullivan.

The proposal, titled the City of Sullivan’s DR2 Clearance Project, was approved for the full grant request of $441,000. The community will receive an award date and a grant agreement from OCRA in the next few weeks.

“The clean up of Central School is the first step in creating an area in the heart of Sullivan for all citizens to appreciate,” said Mayor Lamb. “Each day we are proving that things can happen when everyone does their part and times time to care about our city.”

Lamb said he and his administration have made the Central School clean-up project a focus of the City’s Hometown Pride Restoration Initiative. Last spring the mayor called on citizens to get involved in an effort to bring public awareness by hosting an ice cream social on the grounds of the property. Residents discussed the current condition and possible future development of the site.

“This is so much more than just a demolition project,” Lamb said. “This is an opportunity for everyone to be a part of a new born spirit of community, a new beginning for Sullivan pride.”

The mayor said demolition of the Central School could be completed by late spring 2013.

“I would like to thank all of the citizens who wrote letters to the state about the value of this project,” Lamb said.  “It is great to partner with the state on this important economic development project for our City. I thank the state for their support of our community.”
