TREES meeting with Ohio Boulevard homeowners
TERRE HAUTE — Ohio Boulevard homeowners will meet Thursday to learn about plans to rebuild the historic area’s tree canopy.
TREES Inc., in cooperation with the City of Terre Haute, will plant 100 shade trees along the boulevard March 27. The spring planting will be the first of several projects TREES Inc. will complete this year in celebration of its 20th anniversary.
The public meeting begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at Corporate Square, 2901 Ohio Blvd. The Wabash Valley Community Foundation, which has offices at Corporate Square, arranged for the use of a conference room at the building.
City Forester Bill Kincius will have maps of the area showing potential planting sites and will discuss the types of trees that will be planted.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989, the Ohio Boulevard-Deming Park Historic District was designed in 1920 by one of America’s best-known landscape architects, George Kessler. Sites for the new trees will be based on Kessler’s landscape design for the boulevard.
Founded in 1990, TREES Inc. is an award-winning, all-volunteer nonprofit organization, which supports tree planting as well as environmental and beautification projects in Terre Haute and Vigo County.
“We are delighted to partner with the City of Terre Haute to restore the Ohio Boulevard tree canopy as the first of our 20th anniversary projects,”said TREES president Trish Eccles. “Over the years, many of the stately trees which graced the boulevard have been lost to time or weather. This project meets all of TREES’ goals; we are planting trees which add to the beauty of this historic area and improve the environment for all Terre Haute citizens.”
