Dugger asking church to move cross

DUGGER — Leaders of a southwestern Indiana town will ask a church to remove a large cross from town property after receiving a complaint from a Washington-based advocacy group.

The Dugger Town Council unanimously agreed Monday to have Faith Community Church move the cross off the property at an entrance to the town along Indiana 54.

The Sullivan Daily Times reports council president Dwight Nielson said the town doesn’t have the money for a legal battle over the cross. Town officials gave permission in 2010 for the cross, which stands about two stories tall and has “Jesus Saves” written across it.

The letter from the Americans United for Separation of Church and State argues the Sullivan County town on Indiana 54 about 30 miles south of Terre Haute is unlawfully endorsing Christianity.
