Do you have unclaimed money coming from the state?

Attorney general reminds that millions in assets can be claimed

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana Attorney General’s office is responsible for about $4.6 million in unclaimed assets that belong to Vigo County residents, former residents or their heirs.

Once again, the state is trying to help the rightful owners reclaim those forgotten assets, which can be dormant bank accounts; lost or forgotten uncashed checks; insurance proceeds; utility refunds; safe deposit box contents; stock dividends or bond interest.

“In every county around the state, Hoosiers have money they have forgotten about or never knew existed,” said Greg Zoeller, Indiana attorney general. “It is my duty to inform Hoosiers how to find and claim it.”

Zoeller stopped by Ivy Tech Community College in Terre Haute Monday to talk about the state’s unclaimed property program and show people how to search for and claim what is rightfully theirs.

Hoosiers can visit www.IndianaUnclaimed.com as well as download a new, free mobile application to search for unclaimed property belonging to themselves, friends, relatives or neighbors. Businesses and charities can also have unclaimed property.

Unclaimed assets total $750,981 in Clay County; $410,830 in Parke; $378,413 in Sullivan; and $605,236 in Vermillion. When Daviess, Greene, Knox and Martin counties are included, the total value is nearly $9.9 million.

In 2011, the attorney general’s office returned $1.4 million in unclaimed property to individuals with last known addresses in the nine-county area that includes Vigo and surrounding counties.

Statewide, Indiana’s unclaimed property database holds more than $350 million in assets.

Each year, the attorney general is required to advertise the list of unclaimed property turned over to the state during the previous year. A list of unclaimed property for the Terre Haute/Lafayette area was published in the Tribune-Star in an insert Thursday and it will be published again Sunday.

After 25 years, the unclaimed funds are transferred to the state’s general fund. “We really try to get it back to the rightful owners first,” Zoeller said. “With the bad economy, I hope people will spend a few minutes and look not only for themselves but for family, neighbors and friends.”

Unclaimed property does not include abandoned vehicles or real estate.

While meeting with media, Zoeller searched the database and found one well-known Hoosier with unclaimed property — Gov. Mitch Daniels, who had $93.44 in unclaimed money from insurance proceeds.

“That’s almost enough for the two of us to go to dinner,” Zoeller said. “I see something good out of this.”
