BRAZIL —
A New Jersey woman died in a fiery crash on Interstate 70 in Clay County early Saturday.
The accident, which occurred at 1:25 a.m. near the 25-mile marker, also injured driver Daniel T. Franklin, 52, of Lake Como, N.J. He was airlifted from the scene to Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of life-threatening injuries, including burns.
Mary J. Franklin, 76, of Lake Como, N.J., died from blunt force trauma prior to the vehicle fire, which resulted when the 1993 Ford Bronco driven by her son went off the highway into the median, struck several trees, and burst into flames.
Indiana State Police at Putnamville report that Daniel Franklin swerved abruptly to miss a deer and traveled off the south side of the roadway into the center wooded median. A passerby, Sean L. Cruz of Indianapolis, along with other unnamed motorists, was able to cut the seatbelt away from Daniel Franklin and remove him from the vehicle during the fire. However, they were unable to free Mary Franklin due to the flames. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Clay County deputy coroner Amy Shelton. An autopsy Saturday afternoon revealed that she died of blunt force trauma prior to the vehicle fire.
