Vermillion County escapee back in custody

An escapee from the Vermillion County Jail at Newport has been captured and returned to jail.

Daniel S. Rodgers, 18, of Perrysville, was back in custody by 6:30 a.m. Friday.

Detective Mike Phelps said Rodgers turned himself in at his mother’s residence in Perrysville right after police executed a search warrant in Cayuga at the home of Rodger’s friend. The fugitive did not resist arrest and no injuries occurred, Phelps said.

Police said Rodgers escaped from the jail at about 9 p.m. Thursday by climbing out a window in an interview room in an unsecured office area of the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department.

Prior to his escape, Rodgers, who was originally arrested on theft charges, was being questioned by Deputy Mike Holtkamp about other theft cases in Vermillion County. Rodgers had been removed from the secure portion of the jail to the interview room to be video-recorded. The interview room is located in the office area of the jail facility.

After interviewing Rodgers for about an hour, Holtkamp left the interview room to verify information from Rodgers. During the two minutes that Holtkamp was out of the room, police said, Rodgers managed to escape through a window and flee the area.

In issuing the escape alert, police stated that Rodgers was believed to be heading to the Cayuga or Perrysville area.

Phelps said most area media were helpful in spreading the word about the escape and alerting the public to the possible danger.
