Goodwill opens new store in Sullivan

SULLIVAN — Art and Judy Jo Hartz live in Bridgeport, Ill., west of Vincennes, but on Tuesday morning, they braved stormy weather to travel to Sullivan, Ind., for the grand opening of a new Goodwill Industries store.

“You can find stuff that you just wouldn’t believe. Stuff that’s brand new,” Art Hartz said as his wife shopped.

They also go to other Goodwill stores. Judy Jo said she’s found “brand new” London Fog coats and a Vera Bradley purse while shopping at Goodwill.

Just after the ribbon-cutting, Judy Jo had a few items in her cart. “By the time I get to the door, it will probably be a lot,” she said.

The new store is just off U.S. 41 in the former Dollar General store. The address is 800 W. Wolfe St.

Goodwill first located in Sullivan in 1982 and then moved 16 years ago to a site one block north of the courthouse square. Now, it’s moved again.

The new store is much larger, with 6,000 square feet, and it is ADA-accessible, said Bill Tennis, executive director of Wabash Valley Goodwill Industries. It has six employees, two more than at the prior location.

He believes the new site is more convenient for shoppers, and with its location near several other businesses, it should draw more traffic. The new store has “a much better shopping environment and much larger selection of merchandise,” Tennis said.

The store will be open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Tara Gallagher is the store manager.

Merchandise includes clothing, household goods, books and furniture. The store also is a donation site.

Increasingly, people from all economic walks of life shop at Goodwill, Tennis said. Even the more affluent “have figured out it’s just smart shopping to buy good, used merchandise and save money.”

Wabash Valley Goodwill Industries has eight locations: Greencastle, Brazil, Sullivan, Terre Haute (three stores), Robinson, Ill., and Paris, Ill.

People also can shop online at a Goodwill auction site, shopgoodwill.com. About 71 Goodwill stores use the site, Tennis said.

Among those who arrived for the 9 a.m. grand opening was Kayle Johnson, 36, of Sullivan, who was checking out winter clothes. “They’ve got really nice clothes and they’re cheap on prices,” she said.

The new location “is a lot better. It’s more convenient and has more parking space,” she said.

Another shopper, Toni Taylor of Fairbanks, described herself as a “Goodwill person.”  She’s always looking for good deals on clothing, shoes and other items, she said.

She found a Halloween decoration she liked, and the store has many others. She goes to Goodwill stores in Sullivan or other locations one or two times a week, she said.

Just minutes after the opening, Sara Moore of Shelburn already had found some toys for her 7-year-old daughter. She also planned to look for some fall clothing. The new store “is a lot bigger and has more selection,” she said.
